Do they still work the same way?

[Now that Gai mentions it...]

It did against the droids. I haven't tested it on a person yet. I don't know what would happen if I fired it at someone without a Void, and I'm not about to take a chance on anyone who isn't an enemy.

[That's very useful to know. Shu takes a mental note of it.]

You shouldn't take that risk. Not here. It might have been fine back in our world.

We aren't allowed to use the same tactics in Luceti.

You can use Voids now, can't you? Try pulling out mine.

[There's a pause for a moment.]

Yeah, I can. But are you sure that's really what you want?

Think of how useful it might be. What I want doesn't matter. We need to use it.

[Don't even ask him that, Gai. Shu's not going to second guess himself here. He's sure he wants Gai to use his Void.]

Well, if you're asking me that earnestly...

[He still isn't sure that Shu really knows what he's getting himself into, but he does know that Shu will no doubt whine at him until he agrees.]

[pretty much.]

I'll come meet you, Gai. You'll see my Void for yourself. [He wants no objections to this.]

Suit yourself.

[~~Let him just go make himself comfortable...~~]

[Shu's at Gai's apartment now and he's knocking on the door. He's going to get impatient soon.]

[And Gai will open the door-- at least this time he isn't glowering at Shu, so that's a plus?]

Don't worry, Elizabeth isn't here this time.

[NOT THE EYE GLOW!]

Can I come in?

[Okay, he didn't mean for that to sound more like "Are you guys not fucking this time?"]

Yeah, sure.

[WOW, RUDE. If you're jealous just say so, Shu.

But Gai moves aside to allow Shu to come in-- and just as he said, the apartment is empty aside from them.]

[He gets jealous easily, it's true. Only when it comes to Inori.

Shu walks in, although he looks unnerved. THIS PLACE BRINGS HIM BAD MEMORIES.]

Are you ready to take out my Void?

[Once again, Gai closes the door behind them, since he doesn't exactly want to be advertising his abilities to the entire world if he can avoid it. Frankly, given a choice, he'd rather not use the Void Genome at all unless absolutely necessary.]

I'm sure you know what to expect from it by now. It goes without saying that it's going to be uncomfortable, so just bear with it until I'm done.

I've seen it many times before. [Shu's going to hold Gai's hand if he lets him because that's how Voids work! He doesn't feel like passing out soon. ] It'll be quick. Do what you have to do.

[Gai could point out that Shu doesn't need to hold his hand, because his powers were fully awakened from the moment he received the Void Genome... but he doesn't. If it makes Shu feel more secure about this whole thing, he'll just stay quiet.]

All right.

[And he holds up his right hand, the mark on the back of it glowing as he plunges that hand right into Shu's chest to withdraw his Void.]

[Shu screams at the pain of his void being extracted. He's seen this done lots of times before and yet it still hurts experiencing it. He looks VERY uncomfortable and Shu's screaming should let Gai know that. As soon as his Void is out he relaxes a bit.]

What's this?

[His Void is nothing he's ever seen before.]

[This thread takes place sometime after Shu hangs up on Shiemi. Shu is fiercely determined to undo his wrongs. He wants to make things straight with Gai.]

Gai, I'm coming to your apartment and you'd better be there.

[That's about all he says but with Shu's tone of voice Gai can figure out what Shu intends to do there. He's being bossy and demanding, but he can't let things go on like this. Besides, he's in a hurry too. Shu's gotta meet up with Shiemi.]

[As luck would have it, Gai is actually fast asleep when his journal starts ringing, and as a result it takes him a few moments of sleepy fumbling to open it up and answer. Yeah, he's sick, and no, he's not in a good mood.]

... I'm not at my apartment. I'm staying at Elizabeth's house right now.

Then I'll leave something and you can pick it up later. I don't have time to explain. [It's rude to keep Shiemi waiting.]

[Now his mind is beginning to clear enough from the combination of sleep and fever that he's actually processing what Shu is saying... and this doesn't sound good.]

What's going on? What are you leaving?

I'm leaving my journal there. You had to hack into my conversations to find out what I was doing. I can't be trusted. This way you'll know if I'm being stupid and incompetent right away. [Shu still has little to no faith in himself, yep.]

[Oh for crying out loud... Gai is two seconds away from snapping at Shu not to be stupid until he manages to rein himself in and acknowledge that it's the pain and fever speaking, not him.]

Fine, but don't use this an excuse to go running off and feeling sorry for yourself.

[He knows you too well, Shu.]

I won't. I'm just going to stay with some friends for a while. I don't need this for it.

[Shu wants to surround himself with things that are familiar. That's the best thing he thinks he can do at the moment.]

... do as you please.

[It sounds like a far less terrible option than what Shu could have come up with, and besides, friends will be good for him. Gai honestly can't find anything to argue here.]
