[The events of a week and a half ago still hang heavy over Gai's mind, something that's unusual for him. He's had his body altered without his consent, even his mind during a few experiments before, but to have his memory messed with... it's far more disconcerting than even he wants to admit. Add in everything else that happened, and you've got one broody former terrorist leader who can't even take out his unhappiness in the Battle Dome due to that damn virus.

So he opts to express himself in another way that's familiar to him, one that doesn't require any physical exertion. Something tells him that he's not the only one feeling this way right now...

When the journal entry begins, the camera is covered, obscuring its owner. All there is is a song playing over the journals, letting the music and the lyrics speak for themselves.

But that isn't all. Once it finishes playing, a written message will appear in a neat and practiced hand.]

There is a universal constant among this world and every other. The world will always force a choice on those within it: either to sit quietly by and be selected out, or to adapt and change. Those are the only two paths that can be chosen.

Our opponents made a fatal mistake when they expected us to choose the former. They underestimated our desire to survive, and that proved to be their undoing. We rose to the challenge, and we survived. And we will keep on surviving, no matter what they may try to send at us. We won't roll over and play dead the way they expect us to.

Well done, Luceti. You should be proud.

Except that we are still locked here. We're still guinea pigs. We're still subject to the same shit pulled out by the same dog with a different collar. And now we know that the barrier that keeps us locked here and supposedly safe means shit to really keep us safe.

Pride should come when we are actually out of this cage and surviving isn't something spoon feed on most of the people here. All we have accomplished is to jump back from the fire to the frying pan.

You mean that getting out of here so they stop being used as guinea pigs and have a real chance to return to their families and worlds isn't enough to keep them motivated? Rhetoric question, I've been here and seen those idiots long enough to know the answer.

Do you really think that most of them still care about escaping? Assuming they ever cared about it. They are motivated to move forward, but their forward isn't the same a person with common sense would choose.

You have a curious idea of "not being content to sit back and be selected out" if you think that fighting "for the peaceful lives here" is different to that. You may think it will bring us one step closer to getting out of here, but so long as they don't want to escape no matter how close we are there, we won't be getting out. If when the time comes and the choice is between everyone staying or leaving, I won't be surprised if many of them choose to actually fight others to force us all to stay in order to keep their peaceful lives here.

And you sound like someone who is new enough to have missed all of those idiots making regular scheduled messages asking people if they would take the choice to leave or to stay here forever without experiments and shit. All of them sounded the same, questioning all the ones who were honest and said they would stay and lashing out at those who said they would leave, because we're just terrible living beings with no heart. I have also seen them scold others for trying to take a chance to leave and failing.

The only reason why they haven't started an inside war to force the rest to agree to stay no matter what is because most of the people no longer bother with trying to remind them that we are not supposed to be here.

The ones I have seen arguing about it the most, about it being fine that everyone stays, aren't those in the situations you describe. Normally those ones just want to stay themselves for other reasons but don't argue against the ones who want to leave. They just wish that when the time to leave comes people will be able between leaving or staying individually.

I don't really care if the people here leave or stay, neither about their reasons for it. But I have to leave and will do as soon as the chance arises. I'm not going to give up my world and life just because some people have gotten comfortable being guinea pigs.

Something to accomplish and a duty to fulfill to be precise.

[If it wasn't for that and because he's not stupid enough to forget that he doesn't deserve any of the few good things Luceti has given to him, Ikki probably wouldn't be as eager and adamant to leave as he is.]

Or the ones to punch them in the face if their "move forward" becomes "stand in the way" of those who want to leave. Whatever you prefer.

[And he would, even if Marco, Smoker or Selphie were the ones opposing him, even if Kotomi returned and stood there in his way. The moment there's a chance to get out, he's going to take it, the rest be damned for all he cares.]

Do you think this will be one of those "sometimes"?

Such a freedom doesn't exist anywhere as far as I know. Much less here, otherwise we wouldn't still be here.

I will bet that they are as good as those who say that killing the "evil" guys in the name of "justice" doesn't make then killers themselves and it's not a crime that some people would want to give them punish for.

You won't be amazed enough at it until you watch them scream at Hell's tribunals about how they are heroes, not sinners.

[Ikki personally never needed cold water thrown his way to know that reasons didn't matter in the big scheme of things and that there wasn't such a thing as general justice.]

Or until you see this "wonderful" "friendly" village turn their backs to someone and want their head because something the Malnosso did to them turned them into monsters and caused havoc around. I'll never get tired of how quickly they forget that we're all in the same shit and that it could have happened to anyone.
