[Someone's calling his name! Who could it be?

Oh well, that's an unfamiliar face. ]

Who is it?

[He quickly jumps down from the tree and greets Gai with a huge smile.]

Hey, did you call for me?

That's right. You don't recognize me?

[Not that he really expects Shu too, but it can't hurt to ask. After all, Haruka had recognized him even after a decade had passed. "I'd know those eyes anywhere," were her words.]

[Shu keeps staring at Gai hoping to find the answer. Too bad Gai's soaring above Shu like a giant tower. He climbs back onto the tree so he can get a better look of Gai's expression.]

You remind me of my best friend.

[Triton, no less. They can't be the same person, can they? Gai looks like he could be in his twenties and Triton is just a kid.]

You mean Triton?

[Gai can't help but smirk a bit at this. Maybe Shu isn't quite as dense as he'd thought... score a few points in Shu's favor.

Which will probably vanish in a few minutes when Shu does something dumb, but hey, it's something.]

That's because I am him.

[He may have said that in part just to see the look on Shu's face.]

Yeah, Triton!

[Shu looks torn between wanting to be excited and feeling slightly concerned. ]

Wait, Triton? No way!

How did you get so big? [You're cheating somehow, Gai.]

I grew up, the same way you're going to.

[Then, raising an eyebrow:]

... sort of. You're still shorter than I am even when you're seventeen.

That's not fair. [Shu's rolling up snow into a snowball and attempting to chuck it at Gai's face.]

I drank lots of milk too.

[Gai dodges it easily, not even moving from where he's standing.]

Sorry, but it looks like it didn't work.

It seems that way.

[Shu smiles and then jumps down from the tree again. ]

Triton, is big sis here? [It's so much fun playing with Triton, it'd be a shame if Mana missed out.]

[Gai's eyes widen for the briefest instant, betraying a flash of surprise, but he manages to get control of himself again before it becomes too obvious and settles his expression into something more neutral, though tinged with sadness.]

No. She's not.

[Shu's not sure what could cause Gai or rather Triton's expression to change that way. He thinks it's best to not respond directly to Gai's comment. ]

It's really cold out today, isn't it? Let's go inside and get something warm to eat.

Too bad you aren't always this hungry when you get older.

[Teenage Shu and his forgetting to eat, honestly. Whatever happened to that ridiculous appetite of his?]

[Lost Christmas happened and a lot of things changed!

Little Shu likes eating and he's disappointed in his older self.]

That's no good. I have to eat lots and lots so I can grow up properly. Haruka said so.

So do you want to get something to eat now?

[Gai won't have any objections to that, not when he's actually gotten himself onto a regular eating and sleeping schedule here in Luceti.]

Yeah! I'll make your favorite!

Don't tell me you don't like Yakisoba anymore. [He'd be so disappointed.]

You're in luck-- it's still my favorite. I even eat the carrots in it now.

[No more picking them out and putting them on Shu's plate! SEE, HE IS AN ADULT.]

[Shu just smiles remembering fond things of Triton. He really hasn't changed much at all.]

[Oh, right... Shu doesn't know that he changed his name.]

Gai.

[Shu tilts his head in confusion. He's listening carefully.]

That's my name now. I'm not Triton anymore.

[He'd put that name behind him a long time ago. Hearing it now just sounds strange.]

You don't like the name my sister gave you?

[Shu's doesn't mind the change because in the end it's Gai's choice. He still can't help his curiosity.]

That name belonged to my old self, not the me I am today. It wouldn't be right to keep using it.

[For a variety of reasons, none of which he feels particularly inclined to explain to Shu.]

But you're still Triton.

[How weird. Shu shrugs and doesn't ask anymore questions. He runs off ahead because HE'S SO HUNGRY. Not waiting for Gai to catch up at all.]

[That is definitely the Shu Gai remembers from his childhood: never thinking too hard about things and just going with his gut. It's too bad that he's changed so much over the years and become almost the complete opposite of what he used to be. If Shu were still the same person he'd been back then... well. It's pointless to speculate on how things would have turned out.

Smirking a little, Gai just follows after Shu in a lazy amble, not even making any effort to match his friend's pace.]

Hurry up, Triton! [Yeah, Shu's still calling him Triton. Gai might have said that it feels wrong for him to use that name, but he's still using it regardless of that. ]
